Webhook Security Best Practices
Verify Webhook Signatures
Always verify the X-AfriRoute-Signature header to ensure webhooks are from AfriRoute:
// Node.js example
const crypto = require('crypto');
function verifyWebhook(payload, signature, secret) {
const hmac = crypto.createHmac('sha256', secret);
const expectedSignature = hmac.update(payload).digest('hex');
return crypto.timingSafeEqual(
Buffer.from(signature),
Buffer.from(expectedSignature)
);
}Return 2xx Status Code
Return a 200-299 status code within 5 seconds to acknowledge receipt. AfriRoute will retry failed webhooks with exponential backoff.
Process Asynchronously
Queue webhook processing to avoid timeouts. Acknowledge receipt immediately, then process in background.
